What is best for deburring hard metals?
Ceramic media is the best all-around deburring media. (We have Fast Cut (FC), Standard Cut (DP) and Washington Mills ceramic with high concentrations of aluminum oxide in a composition called WK).
I need to deburr Titanium. What media is best?
We have a very dense ceramic material called 120c, that works great on titanium.
What is best for deburring soft metals and plastics?
Ceramic media works best for all materials. If you want a nice matt finish along with deburring you can also use plastic media with or without embedded aluminum oxide (DPLD40, DPHP230 and V for polishing).
What are the steps to achieve a high polish finish?
Steps needed for a high polish are very dependent on the starting surface. Polishing parts that have previously been polished can typically be done with a single step process (porcelain). This is very common for transmission gears and similar parts. Polishing parts that have a rough surface, or tool marks usually require 3 or more steps (ceramic, to remove high spots, Plastic to smooth the surface then porcelain and finally to crushed walnut (to brighten the surface).
My media creates lots of foam. What should I do?
Some foaming can be reduced or completely eliminated by placing a fan over the circulation bucket. The air flow reduced the surface tension of the bubbles allowing them to pop more easily. Sometimes foam is just a part of the process. A scoop can be used to scrape the top of the foam off the circulation bucket every 1 to 3 hours.
Porcelain lifespan
Porcelain doesn’t wear like other types of media. Porcelain should last a great number of years before needing to be replaced.
Plastic lifespan
We find that with medium to heavy use of a vibration deburr machine (8 hours per day 3 days a week) you should expect to top off your 2.5 cubic foot machine with additional media with about 1 quart a month. (2 quarts for a 5cf machine).
Ceramic lifespan
Ceramic has a similar wear pattern as plastic media. High use you should expect to top off your Whisper Shake 2.5 with about 1 quart a month.
How often should I replace media?
Typically media doesn’t need to be replaced. Unless you find small particles are getting wedged in pockets and holes. When this occurs, it’s best to screen your media to remove the small sizes that get stuck and replace the same volume with new larger media. For most situations you’ll only need to top off the machine with new media as volume is lost due to wear.
What media should I use water with and which should be ran dry?
Most processing is best done wet with ceramic, plastic or porcelain media (either just water, a polishing compound, or corrosion preventative added to the water). Dry operations are typically performed with either Crushed Walnut or Crushed Corncob during the final step of polishing, to brighten the metal surface.
Do you keep media in stock?
Yes, we have 20+ different compositions, sizes and shapes in-stock and can ship same or next day.
